Partnering with our consumers
Consumer engagement is the process where organisations actively work and partner with consumers, carers and the community to design, plan and evaluate health care services.
Engagement occurs at different levels across SMHS, including:
- engaging with consumers to provide feedback and assist in planning related to a specific unit or service
- seeking consumers and the community participation and input into how services are delivered, evaluated and improved.
Community Advisory Councils
Our Community Advisory Councils (CACs) across SMHS were established to provide opportunities for consumer participation.
Members of our various hospital CACs work in partnership with staff to ensure the consumer voice is heard, acknowledged and valued by our health service.
CAC members contribute to:
- the development and delivery of services to meet the needs of the communities we serve
- providing a consumer and community perspective on activities, initiatives, policies and projects that impact on consumers
- communication and consultation with the community
- facilitating improvements, in partnership with staff and management
- awareness, understanding and compliance with relevant standards, for example National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards and National Standards for Mental Health Services.
