Supporting research projects aimed at improving patient outcomes and quality of life

Current research

Research is critical to SMHS and the community we serve.

Our research projects include sponsored clinical drug trials, national and international collaborative trials and locally initiated projects aimed at improving patient outcomes and quality of life.

It is a credit to our investigators that the impact of their research often extends beyond the local setting, with project outcomes having national and international significance for patient quality and safety, clinical and lifestyle outcomes.

In 2022, the majority of SMHS research projects were conducted at Fiona Stanley Hospital, however a significant number includes collaboration across SMHS sites including:

  • Fremantle Hospital
  • Rockingham General Hospital
  • various community services.

This included:

  • 72 projects which received approval from SMHS Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC)
  • 139 projects approved via governance to proceed at SMHS sites
  • 581 publications with an affiliation noted with SMHS or a SMHS site were sourced.

A list of all research projects can be found by using the search engine on the WA Health Research Governance Service (RGS) system (external site).

SMHS continues to be a leader in adopting digital solutions and promotes clinical trial opportunities via the ClinTrial Refer app.

This Australian digital innovation enables doctors and patients to independently search for actively recruiting clinical trials and to access trial site locations and contact details in real time.
