Multicultural Action Plan

Health care works best when everyone feels safe, welcomed and respected

Multicultural Action Plan

The South Metropolitan Health Service (SMHS) community is diverse, with:

  • 38 per cent of community members born overseas
  • 137 languages spoken
  • 205 ancestries represented.

It is therefore important we continue to provide culturally responsive services and offer a welcoming and inclusive workplace.

Launched in March 2026, the ‘SMHS Multicultural Action Plan 2026 – 2030: Working together to ensure everyone in our diverse community feels safe, welcomed, and respected’ affirms the SMHS commitment to leading the way in culturally responsive care and ensuring a welcoming, safe workplace for all.

Our multicultural vision

“By 2030, SMHS will be known for providing culturally responsive care, fostering a diverse and inclusive workforce, and cultivating a culture of respect and inclusion.”

This vision is in line with the WA Multicultural Policy Framework (external site) and the SMHS vision of excellent health care, every time.

Guiding us forward

The plan will guide SMHS to:

  • engage with its community
  • ensure facilities across SMHS offer an inclusive and welcoming environment, informed by culturally responsive policies
  • advance our multicultural efforts
  • build stronger community relationships.
