Strengthening relationships with our community and partners

Our community

Strengthening relationships with our community and partners is a strategic priority or SMHS.

We are committed to:

  • engaging with the community to better define and deliver the services required to meet their health and wellbeing needs
  • optimising existing partnerships and exploring new opportunities for innovative alliances both within and outside of health care.

SMHS community snapshot

The following data offers an insight into the health and wellbeing of members of the SMHS community:

  • The SMHS catchment has an estimated population of 698,616 people, or nearly a quarter of the Western Australian community.
  • The average life expectancy of a person living within the SMHS catchment is 85 years.
  • Of our adult population:
    • 23 per cent have high blood pressure and 23 per cent have high cholesterol
    • 24 per cent drink alcohol at levels that could lead to long-term harm

    • 30 per cent eat fast food at least weekly – 6 per cent less than 2021–22
    • 9 per cent smoke – 2 per cent less than the WA average
    • 74 per cent are overweight or obese
    • 60 per cent are active for more than 150 minutes each week.
