Mental health nursing opportunities

Make a positive change.

Mental health nursing opportunities

The nursing staff who work in mental health services often describe it as a calling – that desire to make a positive difference to a person’s life, and that of their family and friends, when they most need it. Hear what our nurses say about working in mental health for SMHS.

We’re not pretending that working in mental health is easy. There will be challenging days, but when these occur, the supportive environment created by your team and colleagues ensures you have the time and assistance you need. As our nursing staff tell us, the good times always outweigh the challenging, which is why some staff have been working in this field for over 30 years.

Mental health nurses specialise in caring for adolescents, adults, and seniors in a variety of settings and in partnership with the patient, their family, and the community. Our mental health nurses describe the role as an opportunity to take into the consideration the whole person and their needs.

By joining us you join a multidisciplinary team of skilled health professionals who all share the same passion as you to make a difference. You will have the opportunity to work across diverse settings including leading hospital environments and community-based services. Your career will be supported by the ongoing opportunity of participating in career development and training courses by leading practitioners.

The south metropolitan Perth region is a fast-growing area encompassing rapidly expanding suburbs, coastal cities and rural settings, creating a diversity of needs for health care. Such an expanding area requires increasing investment. Several new services and facilities are due to come online shortly that will provide more diverse mental health options for residents.

Mental health nurses can be an enrolled nurse (EN) or registered nurse (RN) and some other nursing roles may also require postgraduate qualifications in mental health.

We welcome people with all levels of skill and experience to search our current vacancies (external site) within mental health or to reach out and have a discussion with one of our recruitment team members by completing an Expression of Interest form Expression of Interest form (external site).

We’re not just looking for locals either. If you’re located in other parts of Australia or overseas, you’re encouraged to follow in the footsteps of many of our mental health nurses who have decided to make WA their home. These staff will tell you that they are now not only working in a field that challenges and fulfils them, but that they are do so in one of the most beautiful and natural parts of the world.

Why don’t you come and join them and us at SMHS?
